When I hit the road to explore and began the writings for the Brazos Bound region trip, I was a bit hesitant. I was heading out alone, which is not too rare, but it was more time than usual! My boys were flying north to finish off their summer vacation with their grandparents. My husband was working and could not come. My roadie filmmaker and compadre was finishing off her summer with her kiddos!

So, off I went. Solo.

But what else was causing this angst for this adventure…

OOOOOOHHHHHHH

Maybe because my late husband was buried on one road, I am traveling down, and my mother died in a car accident on another.

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH

That is what was wrong. My gracious!

Why do I tell you this? Because my fellow roadies, the peace, beauty, and nature just one hour out of a massive city, will leave you rested, relaxed, and ready for more (along with hopefully learning a few things). The road, nature, and quiet can almost heal and refresh anything.

I knew when I passed the first school I ever taught at, this trip was going to be a fantastic trip down memory lane, and that is just what it is was for me!

This region came to mind because I wanted to create a trip that could be done in a weekend or long weekend. Although I think any of the regions could be done as couples’ trips or solo, I wanted to see if I could create this as a solo, couples, OR as a family trip. I think we did just that!  Also, I picked this area because it is not a giant tourist trap with crowds, and it is not expensive, yet has quite a bit to do and see, along with unusual accommodations, if you choose them. It has good food and an even better history! I believe anyone who picks this region will not be disappointed.

Some cool things about this region:

  1. If you live close to the metroplex, you could use this manual for three different day trips.
  2. You could use the manual to travel three different full weekend trips.
  3. Like the other regions, you could make the trip as long as you would like also.
  4. It is called Brazos Bound because you will follow the Brazos River, a tributary of the Brazos called the Paluxy, along with a bit of the Trinity.
  5. You will be on the Texas Lakes Trail, so if you travel in Texas hot months, there’s plenty of water to cool off all around you!
  6. You will walk where the dinosaurs did, literally!
  7. You will encounter no crowds and no traffic.
  8. You can hike, swim, fish, kayak, canoe, repel, track dinosaurs, ride horses, ride through a safari, tube the Brazos, relax on a lake beach, and rent a boat and cruise for the afternoon. (There is more!) Yup.. all in one weekend!
  9. You can stay in cabins by the water, treehouses, hotels, or hobbit homes over the Brazos. There are adult-only accommodations if you are looking for that and family-friendly!
  10. If you are not a road trip fan, this is only a two-hundred-mile round-trip region, which means you are not in the car more than 2 hours a day – even if you come from DFW!

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with any part of this trip! It is so easy and so beautiful. I firmly believe that if you take this trip alone or with a crew, you will not regret it. You all can learn so much in a short time. Combining all the encounter topics and discoveries we made was challenging because your time on the road is fast!

I chose to stay at the more unusual places which cost more and where you can use points. There are Holiday Inn and Hilton chains in all cities for points purposes, and if you brought your food, you could literally spend a couple of hundred dollars! And don’t forget, you can use this for day trips and spend less than $200 for a full day (if you are eating out).

Approximate Solo Budget: Using no hotel points and staying in accommodations other than hotel chains less than$1000.00. This is eating out, no picnics, and all activities!

Approximate Couple Budget: Using no hotel points and staying in accommodations other than hotel chains less than $1400.00. This is eating out, no picnics, and all activities!

Approximate Family Budget: Using no hotel points and staying in accommodations other than hotel chains less than $1600.00. This is eating out, no picnics, and all activities!
